St. Basil the Great

St. Basil the Great wrote the Rule which regulated the day-to-day life of Eastern monastics, and, through St. Benedict, Westerners as well. Basil is depicted in bishop's robes rather than the monastic "schema" (marks). In his day married men could still serve in the episcopacy; only after the seventh century were monks the only candidates allowed.
