St. Benedict was born in Nursia around the year 480. He was educated in Rome, but found life in the city distasteful. Following in the pattern of earlier monastics, St. Benedict fled from the city and became a hermit. As often happened with hermits, they are sought out by others seeking their wisdom. St. Benedict consented to lead a group of monks, but they found his way of living too difficult and tried to poison him. He left this group and went on to found twelve monasteries in the area south of Rome. He is considered the Father of Western Monasticism.
