St. Blaise was a 4th century bishop and physician in the city of Sebaste in Armenia. According to tradition, while being led to prison, a woman set her child, who was choking on a fish bone, in front of the Saint, and the child was saved. For this reason, St. Blaise is often called upon as the patron of throat illnesses, and for those who are choking. He was martyred in the year 316. This icon is based on a modern Greek prototype.
