Sts. Cyril and Methodius were born in Thessalonika in the 9th century in an area where they learned the Slavic language from the Slavs living there. They became priests, and later, after receiving a request from the Moravian Prince Rastislav, missionaries to Moravia. There they developed a written alphabet for the Slavic language, and translated liturgical texts. They were summoned to Rome to defent the use of the vernacular for the liturgy, They were elevated to Bishop, but St. Cyril fell asleep in the lord before he could return to Moravia. St. Methodius returned and continued translating texts including a translation of the Holy Scriptures. He reposed in 885 appointing Gorazd, a slav, to succeed him.
