Born in Thessalonika in the year 270 to a wealthy family, St. Demetrios became a well respected soldier in the Roman army. First and foremost, however, St. Demetrios considered himself a Christian. He used every opportunity to preach the Gospel to those around him, and helping to convert many people. When news of this reached the emperor Maximian, his execution was ordered. While in prison, St. Demetrios continued preaching the Gospel and converting those who had been imprisoned with him. After his execution, St. Demetrios was buried, and the smell of myrrh poured out from his tomb. For this reason, he is often referred to as St. Demetrios the Myrrh-streaming.
