St. Herman was a monk at the Valaam Monastery. When a mission to the natives of Alaska was planned, St. Herman was chosen to participate. The rest of the missionaries died due to the hardships of travel, and St. Herman was left alone. He became a hermit, dedicated to the most severe ascetism. He is known for his extroardinary humility, feats of strength, austerity of living, relationship with, and love for the natives and the environment, and his prescience. He lived out his life on Spruce Island, and was called upon to help in times of trouble by the inhabitants.

The two images on the left are from a mural of the American Orthodox Saints commissioned by Nativity of the Virgin Mary Church (OCA) in Monongahela PA. The 16" x 20" icon on the right was commissioned by Fr. Vasili Wilkes for an iconostasis for a chapel in Ft. Lauderdale.
