St. Isaac the Syrian was a 6th century monk near the city of Ninevah. He lived a strict ascetic life, and was noted for his wisdom and holiness. Because of this, he was sought out by many. He was asked to lead his monastery, and left seeking the quiet, contemplative life of a hermit. Again, he was sought out, this time, being made Bishop of Ninevah. Feeling that he could not change the wicked ways of the people in the city, he resigned as bishop and again sought out the contemplative life in solitude. Only later in life did he return to community life, and died there in the Monastery of Rabban Shabur.
