St. James the Greater is the Son of Zebedee, and the brother of St. John. He and his brother were known as Boanerges, or "sons of thunder" for their great zeal. He was one of just three disciples who formed an inner circle within the twelve comprised also of St. Peter, and St. John. These three were present for the Transfiguration of our Lord as well as the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. His missionary activity after Pentecost is unclear, although some traditions claim that he went to Spain, before returning to Jerusalem where he was beheaded by Herod Agrippa and received the crown of martyrdomThis icon was done through the St. John of Damascus Icon Studio, and is part of an apostles tier in the iconostasis of the Chapel at Camp Nazareth.
