St. Jeromewas a 5th century scholar who, after years spent in reckless living, was baptized and soon left behine worldly pursuits. He spent much of his time in translating and elaborating upon the Holy Scriptures. He was at times a hermit, endeavouring to remove himself from the temptations of this world, and at other times worked closely with church officials to build monasteries, to translate the Scriptures, and to fight against heresies. He is depicted here, removing a thorn from the paw of a lion, although it has been suggested that this tradition was transferred to St. Jerome from St. Gerasimus. This 10" x 12" Icon was commissioned for St. John the Wonderworker Orthodox Church.
