St. Simon Peter was a fisherman before being called to follow Jesus. As time went on, his stature among the twelve grew, leading to Jesus establishing St. Peter as the Rock upon which the church would be founded. During the passion of Christ, St. Peter denied knowing Christ, and for this, his faith was shaken, and he repented. After the Resurrection, Christ again established St. Peter as the foundation of the Church. Following the Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, St. Peter was the first to publicly preach the life, death, and resurrection of the Lord. St. Peter reached out to Gentiles, receiving criticism from those who believed that Christians were still subject to all of the Jewish laws and traditions. After being imprisoned and nearly executed, St. Peter was miraculously released from prison, and decided to travel, spreading the Word of God to other lands. St. Peter's missionary work helped greatly to establish the Christian Church, but also established the equality of Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians. After preaching in Rome, St. Peter was martyred by being crudified upside-down, feeling unworthy of dying in the same manner as his Lord. The icon on the left was done through the St. John of Damascus Icon Studio as part of the Apostle's tier in the iconostasis of the Chapel at Camp Nazareth.
