The actual Resurrection of Christ is not traditionally depicted in Byzantine Iconography because no one witnessed the resurrection. Instead, iconography of the Descent into Hades and the appearances of the Lord after his resurrection has developed. The Descent into Hades depicts Christ pulling Adam and Eve from their graves, along with the other righteous of the Old Testament with St. John the Baptist who preceded Jesus to announce the coming of the Messiah to the souls in Hades.
