The Good Shepherd

The Good Shepherd by Matthew D. Garrett 1999 "I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep." -- John 10:14-15.

The Good Shepherd is one of the earliest iconographic types. The image exemplified philanthropia (the love of mankind) for early Greek Christians. Early versions depict Christ as a young unbearded man carrying a lamb on his shoulders , or in his hands. Here, Christ is depicted bearded, in keeping with the Byzantine Style. -- 12" x 14" -- based on a modern Greek prototype.
