St. Alexis of Wilkes-Barre
St. Alexis was born in 1854 in Austro Hungary and was raised an Eastern Rite Catholic. In 1889 he was assigned to a parish in Minneapolis Minnesota. The Catholic Bishop under which he served (Bishop Ireland) would not allow him to serve the Eastern Rite and therefore would not accept him as a priest in his diocese. St. Alexis the sought the acceptance of the Russian Bishop. He was accepted into the Orthodox Church and worked tirelessly to reach his fellow Uniates and bring them to the Orthodox Church. He was in many ways a controversial figure, but was seen as a very gifted priest and evangelist to the Slavic people. He was considered for the Episcopy, but declined due to his age and health. His health began to decline in 1908, and he reposed on May 7, 1909. The two images on the left are from a mural of the American Orthodox Saints commissioned by Nativity of the Virgin Mary Church (OCA) in Monongahela PA. The 8" x 10" icon on the right is in the private collection of the Rhodes family.
